Effects of perilla oil on platelet and inflammatory responses in healthy smokers: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel trial.

Abstract

α-Linolenic acid (ALA), a plant-derived omega-3 fatty acid, has been reported to exert anti-atherosclerotic and anti-inflammatory effects. Perilla oil (PO), a rich dietary source of ALA, has yet to be comprehensively evaluated for its effects on blood circulation. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial assessed the effects of 8-week PO supplementation (4.8 g per day) on blood coagulation, and inflammatory response in healthy smokers. The PO intake significantly prolonged collagen-induced ADP-closure time (P = 0.045) and reduced mRNA expression of tumor necrosis factor-α (P = 0.027) and T-box transcription factor 21 (P = 0.022). In addition, PO supplementation for 8 weeks increased the proportion of ALA in plasma (P = 0.003) and red blood cells (P = 0.013), as well as eicosapentaenoic acid in plasma (P = 0.019). These findings suggest that PO supplementation increases blood omega-3 levels and modulates blood coagulation and inflammatory responses, potentially supporting blood flow.
