Abstract:

Six hundred mg of N-acetylcysteine 3 times a day by mouth for 5 days in 17 nonsmoking patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis showed a significant increase in glutathione levels in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, as compared to pretreatment showing that N-acetylcysteine therapy can augment deficient lung glutathione levels in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, therefore, enhancing pulmonary antioxidant protection.
