Preventing Disease Before It Starts
The human body has over 60 trillion cells, and every one of them is vulnerable to the development of multiple diseases. One of the biggest problems facing medicine is how to diagnose these diseases earlier, in order to improve the chances of stopping and reversing them.
Here are a few classic examples of the challenges of early detection. 1

Liver cancer – Studies have established that the liver is a very resilient organ. In fact, it is the only organ that can rebuild itself if a part of it is damaged or diseased2. Unfortunately, it is so resilient that up to 70% of it can be diseased before the body emits liver enzymes to signal that something is wrong.3 By that time, a person is likely to be diagnosed with late stage cancer with very little chance for recovery.4

Diabetes – The classic tests for diabetes are for total glucose levels or the AIC test, which provides a 90-day window of glucose fluctuations.5 If patients are diagnosed with pre-diabetes, there is still a chance for reversal of the condition, but this will rarely happen by using prescription medications. However, there is another test called the glucose tolerance test that can detect problems in cells 5 to 7 years before someone is diagnosed as pre- diabetic.6 By using this test, a person diagnosed with a weakened pancreas, or insulin resistance, could make changes in their diet and exercise program and never be diagnosed as pre-diabetic.

Breast cancer – Women depend on mammograms to detect breast cancer, but this test has several serious shortcomings. In order to see a tumor, mammograms need 4 billion cells, and this is usually diagnosed as Stage 2 or Stage 3 cancer. Even at 4 billion cells, the diagnosis is only 65% accurate, which leads to many inaccurate assessments and far too many unnecessary and overly invasive treatments.7 Also, mammograms expose women to terrible pain and to harmful radiation. Some scientists have even stated that mammograms cause more cancers than they find.8 There is a better way to detect problematic breast cells about 8 to 10 years before mammograms can see anything. In fact, when only 200 breast cells have become stressed, it is possible to detect the presence of these cells with a very scientific and accurate tool called thermography.9
Five Stages of Cellular Deterioration
There are five specific sequential stages of cellular deterioration, and they are based on the electrical output mechanism in every cell. All cells have an energy production mechanism called mitochondria.10 In this energy factory, glucose and oxygen combine to make energy needed by the cell to do its job. Every cell is busy making hormones or neurotransmitters, creating images in our eyes, allowing our heart muscles to pump out blood or helping our lungs to fill with air and push oxygen out to our cells. Without energy, none of these cellular functions could occur, and this is the key to how the body is able to not only provide an early warning system for disease, but also allow for the reversal of these cellular challenges before disease can even happen.
The five stages can be defined as follows:
1. Stressed – This is the first stage of cellular deterioration. It occurs when cells lack sufficient nutrition, are deprived of oxygen, are exposed to toxins or experience emotional trauma. Even lack of sleep or lack of emotional support can cause cell membranes to stiffen in defense, which impedes the input of nutrients, as well as the outflow of cellular waste or toxins.11
These factors cause the cell to speed up its activity in order to compensate for a cellular challenge, which in turn can create inflammation and the generation of increased heat.12 For example, the previously mentioned glucose tolerance test and thermography are classic examples of methods used to detect cellular stress or inflammation.
2. Weakened – This is the second stage of cellular deterioration. When cells have been under stress for too long, they become weakened. In this stage, cells produce less energy because they are exhausted and begin to lose their ability to perform their tasks in a normal fashion. As such, they become vulnerable to cellular challenges, such as germs and other outside invaders.13 Our normal immune defenses become overwhelmed and we start to experience symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, mood changes, muscle cramps, poor sleep patterns, poor vision or the inability to focus.
There are hundreds of symptoms for both stressed and weakened cells that can be accurately used to determine nutritional deficiencies, toxin exposure or systemic changes in the body. Hormone imbalance is a classic example of the ability of symptoms to help detect cellular changes, such as those accompanying cellular weakness.14 (i.e. PMS and erectile dysfunction)
3. Dysfunctional – This stage of cellular deterioration occurs when cells have been weakened to the extent that groups of cells in an organ have stopped doing their jobs effectively. When kidneys become dysfunctional, blood pressure can go up. When the pancreas is not working properly, glucose and insulin levels will go up. And, as stated previously, when the liver finally becomes too dysfunctional, liver enzymes are released that can be detected in a blood test.15
Unfortunately, it is the dysfunctional stage when most conventional medical diagnosis can be made. Dysfunctional cells can be repaired, but it is much more difficult than repairing stressed or weakened cells. And, it is equally unfortunate that conventional medicine is usually satisfied to manage these dysfunctional cells, rather than try to repair them. In fact, there is mounting scientific evidence that dysfunctional cells that are merely managed with prescription medications often advance to disease states eventually.16 In addition, many of these prescription medications actually produce other cellular challenges leading to more chronic illnesses and premature death.17
4. Mutated – If a cell has been dysfunctional for too long, its defenses become seriously compromised. Cells get bombarded with millions of attacks by free radicals (oxidative toxins) from a variety of sources everyday, and eventually these free radicals reach the nucleus of the cell and start to erode it.18 This causes the nucleus of the cell to begin to lose some of its genetic integrity, as well as the program built into the cell to guide its functions.
This mutated cell has a few weeks to repair the damage, but if it can not perform this repair in a timely manner, the mutation continues to advance, causing even more cells to become mutated.19 When cells are eventually replaced, which most cells are, they are replaced with mutated cells instead of new healthy ones. This has created the perfect storm for the next stage of cellular deterioration, the disease stage.
5. Disease – In the disease stage of cellular deterioration, the nucleus becomes so destroyed that it can no longer function. 20 The following are some examples:

Liver cells lose its ability to neutralize toxins, as well as construct and store nutrients.

Pancreas cells lose their ability to make enzymes and insulin, which combines with glucose to make energy in the cell.
-
Brain cells lose their ability to produce neurotransmitters, which prevents them from sending signals to neuron receptors.
The disease stage is extremely difficult to stop or reverse. That is why it is so important to catch any disease at the beginning of this deterioration process when cells are stressed or weakened. If this was possible, there is good evidence to indicate that at least 80% of chronic illness could be prevented and even reversed.21
Chronic disease is caused primarily by lifestyle decisions or preventable causes such as poor nutrition, toxins, stress, poor sleep, tobacco, alcohol, excess sunshine and lack of physical activity. Therefore, the existence of this final stage of cellular deterioration is by in large a choice.22
Disease Reversal Explained – Nearly every chronic disease has been prevented or reversed thousands of times, and this has been documented in countless articles and books. There has been some explanation about how this has been accomplished. However, there is one example that may explain this process as well or better than any other. This example is based on a small clinical study of kidney disease. All of the patients were on dialysis at the beginning of the study. Each patient was given 180 mg of Co-enzyme Q10 daily for a three-month period. At the end of the three months, kidney function tests indicated that 50% of patients were able to be taken off of their dialysis.23 Most doctors would say this is impossible because dialysis is considered the end stage of kidney disease. In the past, only a kidney transplant could save these patients. How was it possible to get 50% of these patients off of dialysis? This is where the five stages of cellular deterioration can offer a logical and scientific explanation.
When kidneys fail, it is not usually due to all of the cells being diseased. Rather, it is often the case that some cells are in various stages of deterioration. None are functioning optimally, but if enough of them are not diseased, it is possible that the non-diseased cells could be revived and return to a normal state of functioning.
Co-enzyme Q10 is known for its ability to help the energy factories in our cells to facilitate the energy production process.24 It also has strong antioxidant capabilities, specifically targeted in the nucleus of the cells. What if the patients experiencing a return to kidney function without the need for dialysis were experiencing the following stages of kidney cell deterioration?
What if the Co-enzyme Q10 was so effective that it managed to re-energize and protect all of the stressed, weakened dysfunctional cells and some of the mutated cells? The following cellular deterioration process would be produced:26
If 70% of the cells of the kidneys were revived, could patients be taken off of their dialysis? The answer is obviously yes.
The question that then follows is, “Why did the other 50% not experience this same reversal of cellular health?” The answer clearly lies in the proposition that too many cells had already advanced to the mutated or diseased stages.
From the standpoint of this researcher, there is no other explanation, especially since this model is based on the energy production capability in the cells. We know that cells produce electricity (energy) in the mitochondria. We know that energy production is vital to a cell’s ability to function. We know that Co-enzyme Q10 is able to enhance this energy production process. However, do we know how to measure this electrical or energy production capability? Actually, we do, and it is explained by Electro Dermal Screening.25
Electro Dermal Screening and the Five Stages of Cellular Deterioration
Electro Dermal Screening was first identified as an indicator of cellular health in the 1940’s by a German doctor named Reinhold Voll, M.D. Dr. Voll was able to measure changes in the body’s electrical conductivity at various acupuncture points on the body. Through extensive testing, Dr. Voll was able to establish a direct connection between various acupuncture points on the hands and feet with every major organ and system in the body. There have been several clinical studies validating the accuracy of this health evaluation tool from UCLA, Stanford, the University of Hawaii and other respected institutions. Several of these studies were controlled, double blind, placebo-controlled studies with accuracy reported in the range of 66-95%. These and other studies have been reported in journals, such as the American Journal of Clinical Pathology, the Clinical Journal of Immunology and the American Journal of Acupuncture.26
One of the scientists with the most extensive knowledge of this technology is William Tiller, Ph.D. Professor Tiller is best known for his famous documentary on cellular health entitled, “What the Bleep Do We Know?”
The reason for this extensive introduction to Electro Dermal Screening is the lack of acceptance by conventional medical practitioners. Tens of thousands of health practitioners in Europe, Japan and North America embrace EDS and have reported hundreds of thousands of case study success stories with its use.27 However, there has been an ongoing war between holistic medicine and allopathic medicine for nearly one hundred years.28 Holistic medicine is beginning to win this war, but there are many battles to be waged before a truly integrated and evidence-based medical system emerges. In the meantime, EDS is a valid technology that can accurately determine the electrical output in most of the organs and systems in our bodies. The following is the basic explanation of this technology as it relates to cellular health:
Dr. Voll established a measurable difference in temperature ranges at various locations on the skin. This lead him to measure electrical differences at the acupuncture points corresponding to the acupuncture points of various organs and systems. He then was able to establish a scale of electrical output based on the physiological health of each organ and system. A hundred-point scale was developed and this is the range that was established, and continues in use to this day.29
Here are some basic guidelines for the use of EDS from a variety of scientific studies:

EDS is not intended to diagnose any disease. It can determine the electrical or energy status of cells within any organ or system.

EDS is subject to errors based on practitioner expertise and the quality of the EDS equipment utilized.
-
Once a low or high EDS reading has been established, the trained health practitioner can use evidence-based treatments, based on the organ or system tested, in order to improve the energy balance in that organ or system.
-
Therefore, if improvements in energy balance are achieved, they are usually confirmed with the reduction of symptoms and/or the concurrence with other testing procedures.30
EDS and the Five Stages of Cellular Deterioration
As far as the use of EDS in the five stages of cellular deterioration is concerned, there is ample evidence to support this theory. The following verifying points can be made:

Fluctuations in EDS readings definitely relate to cells in the body being stressed, normal or weakened.

Stressed or weakened cells can often indicate a potential health problem 5- 10 years before most other conventional testing procedures.31
-
Practitioner experience verifies that less invasive holistic treatments can be used to provide safe, effective and less costly resolution to most chronic illnesses. EDS can initially identify problem areas, and then verify the improvements identified using holistic or functional medicine approaches.32
Other Early Warning Tests
EDS is just one of several tests that can be used to identify the stressed or weakened stages of cellular deterioration. The following are some of the other tests used by holistic or functional medicine practitioners:

Thermography – This test uses infrared heat sensing to determine if cells are producing heat caused by inflammation, angiogenesis or hyperactivity. It can detect over 200 early stage cellular changes. In terms of breast cancer, thermography can see problematic cells 8 to 10 years before mammograms can see anything.

ALCAT – This blood test can detect various levels of food sensitivity, which can cause digestive issues, as well as other chronic conditions. This type of inflammation can also deplete energy from the immune system leading to increased vulnerability to illness.

Electro Dermal Screening – This test measures the electrical output of our organs and systems producing an accurate early warning of impending disease. Electrical output will increase 5 to 10 years before most conventional medical tests can detect any developing health problem.

C-reactive protein – This is a blood test that measures the amount of inflammation in our bodies, which is probably a better indicator of possible heart problems than cholesterol tests.

Glucose tolerance test – This blood test measures the ability of the pancreas and our cells to process ingested sugar. It can indicate potential risk for diabetes 5-7 years before the A1C or total fasting glucose test.

Vitamin D3 – This blood test measures the level of vitamin D3 in our blood, which is crucial for the prevention of many diseases. Women with high levels of vitamin D3 have a 77% lower risk for breast cancer.

Early CDT lung test – This blood test can detect early cellular changes in lung cells; about 5 years before a CT scan. It is 91% accurate, whereas the CT scan has an accuracy rating of 51%.

Galectin 3 – This is an early stage biomarker for heart disease and cancer. It measures potential fibrosis build up, which is the beginning of these diseases.

NT pro BNF – This is a prohormone biomarker that is an excellent indicator of possible future heart problems. Low levels occur before any conventional heart symptoms do, which means it has value as an early detection test.

Red Drop TK test – Thymidine kinase is a protein that increases when cells begin their journey towards cancer. This pre-system test indicates cellular changes years before standard tests, such as CT scans, MRI’s and mammograms can see anything.33
These tests help to verify changes in our cells when they become stressed or weakened. These changes can take different forms, such as inflammation (c-reactive protein), fibroid formation (Galectin 3), protein increases (Red Drop TK test) and declining cellular function (glucose tolerance test). The tests are all early warning indicators of the potential for the development of chronic disease. As such, they provide physicians, especially holistic/functional doctors, an opportunity to prevent the progression of cells to the disease stage. This has been proven in physician case studies, as well as clinical studies thousands of times for virtually every chronic disease.34
Preventing Free Radical Induced Disease
Most cellular deterioration is initiated by exposure to free radicals. These molecules have a missing electron, and steal an electron from our healthy cells. Most scientists agree that free radicals are the primary cause of most diseases. Therefore, knowing more about free radicals and how to avoid, eliminate and neutralize them is extremely important for the prevention and reversal of disease.35

Every person has at least 700 contaminants in their body at any given time.

Some toxins move in and out of the body in hours (arsenic), while others can stay in the body for 50 years (DDT).

Toxins enter our bodies through food, air, water we drink and water we bath in.

Toxins can also be transferred from mother to baby during pregnancy, and by touching our mouth or eyes.

Chemicals or toxins can attack and damage the DNA of our cells, causing premature aging and disease.

Direct cause and effect relationships between specific toxins and specific diseases are difficult because some toxins move in and out of the body quickly. Also, many toxins have a similar impact, making specific attributes almost impossible.36

- Americans only get 30% of the antioxidants they need to protect themselves from damage.40

Each cell gets 10,000 free radical hits per day.

The body has 50-100 trillion cells.

The body gets 7 trillion free radical hits per second.

Cells go through 5 stages of deterioration; (stressed, weakened, dysfunctional, mutated, diseased).

This deterioration happens over many years, due to high levels of free radicals and low levels of nutrients.

The body needs 10,000 – 12,000 mg of antioxidants per day, and only gets about 5,000 – 6,000 mg.

This nutritional gap is caused by many factors:41
- The soil has been depleted via poor farming techniques.
- Produce is picked before it is ripe.
- Produce is over processed, which depletes nutrients.
- Long storage and transportation depletes nutrients.
- Cooking depletes nutrients.
- Lack of adequate chewing causes nutrient loss.
- Low enzyme levels. (caused by aging)

- Cell permeability is a factor. (Caused by toxins, stress, saturated fat and other factors).
- People eat low nutrient foods.

Summary
The five stages of cellular deterioration have provided a better picture of how chronic disease can be prevented and often reversed. Over 80% of chronic disease is preventable, and now scientists and doctors are improving their ability to explain exactly how this is possible, including the keys to the prevention and reversal process. These key prevention factors include:

Better nutrition with whole organic foods, such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, omega fish, healthy oils, such as olive and coconut oil, and spices, such as turmeric and ginger.

Detoxification using detoxifying foods like celery and asparagus, nutritional supplements, such as milk thistle and chlorella, exercise for sweating, saunas, massage and acupuncture.

Stress management by avoiding stress, taking B supplements, deep breathing, meditation, using yoga or tai chi, and using essential oils and acupressure points known to reduce stress.

Sleep improvement with seven to nine hours of sleep per night, not eating two hours before sleep, no coffee or stimulants several hours before sleep, calming audio messages or taking nutritional supplements, such as 5 HTP or melatonin, if necessary. Sleep helps the body to detoxify and balance itself.

Exercise, including aerobic, resistance and stretching in order to improve the flow of oxygen, keep muscles and bones healthy, facilitate nutrient absorption, and balance our moods and emotions, as well as ensure proper functioning of insulin receptors for the production of energy and balancing glucose levels.

Balancing hormones everywhere in the body, but especially the hormones related to the endocrine system. Hormone testing was not included in the previous list of early warning tests, but is certainly as important as any of the other tests mentioned. Unbalanced hormones offer a clear signal that something is not right in the body. In most cases, these hormone imbalances can be adjusted with natural treatments that are both safe and effective.48

Nutritional supplements are usually necessary to maintain good health and prevent disease. There are no good studies that prove otherwise, and there are over 15,000 studies proving the need for quality nutritional supplements. Symptom evaluation, blood tests and urine analysis can identify nutritional deficiencies very accurately. Self-help is good for some people in this identification of needed supplements, but a qualified nutritionist or a holistic doctor is also a good way to ensure the best utilization of this prevention tool.
