Now modern scientific research reveals that the practice of smudging (burning herbs) may actually have life-saving implications by purifying the air of harmful bacteria.

It may be counterintuitive to some but burning certain herbs produce “medicinal” smoke which may cleanse the air of pathogenic organisms. In one study below a mixture of medicinal herbs was observed to reduce a wide range of aerial bacterial populations by 94% within 60 minutes, with the disinfecting effect maintained for up to 24 hours.

Another study indicates that even the inhalation of the smoke of certain medicinal plants from South Africa produces significant antimicrobial effects consistent with its use in traditional healing practices.
