Epub 2016 Dec 5. PMID: 28050282 Abstract Title:  Effect of the Lipoxygenase Inhibitor Baicalein on Muscles in Ovariectomized Rats. Abstract:  Sarcopenia, a loss of muscle mass accompanying osteoporosis, leads to falls and fall-related injuries. Baicalein, as a phytochemical agent, has an antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effect in muscle. In this study, sixty-one female Sprague Dawley rats were divided into five groups: four groups were ovariectomized (OVX) and one control group was nonovariectomized (NON-OVX). Eight weeks after ovariectomy, three disparate concentrations (1 mg/kg body weight (BW), 10 mg/kg BW, and 100 mg/kg BW) of baicalein were applied subcutaneously daily in three OVX groups. Mm. soleus, gastrocnemius, and longissimus were extracted; their diameter, area, relation to body, and muscle weights as well as number of capillaries per fibre wererecorded. In Mm. soleus and gastrocnemius, the baicalein effect (increasing number of capillaries per fibre) was proportional to the dose applied. The fibre diameters and area under baicalein treatment were significantly greater compared to OVX and NON-OVX groups. In M. longissimus, we observed a shift to type IIa fibres. Serum creatine kinase levels were significantly lower in highest baicalein concentration group. We conclude that baicalein can stimulate angiogenesis, though not fibre type-specific, in skeletal muscle and reduce the estrogen-related loss of fibre diameter and area in the skeletal muscle in rats. Therefore, a protective effect of baicalein on muscle cells can be assumed. https://greenmedinfo.com/article/baicalein-has-protective-effect-muscle-cells#comments Baicalein Sarcopenia Angiogenesis Inducing Agents Angiogenesis Inducing Agents Baicalein Ovariectomy-Induced Changes Sarcopenia Animal Study Thu, 26 Jan 2017 21:39:18 +0000 greenmedinfo 142627 at https://greenmedinfo.com The beneficial effects of taurine to counteract sarcopenia. https://greenmedinfo.com/article/beneficial-effects-taurine-counteract-sarcopenia n/a PMID:  Curr Protein Pept Sci. 2016 Nov 22. Epub 2016 Nov 22. PMID: 27875962 Abstract Title:  The beneficial effects of taurine to counteract sarcopenia. Abstract:  Aging is a multifactorial process characterized by several features including low-grade inflammation, increased oxidative stress and reduced regenerative capacity, which ultimately lead to alteration in morpho-functional properties of skeletal muscle, thus promoting sarcopenia. This condition is characterized by a gradual loss of muscle mass due to an unbalance between protein synthesis and degradation, finally conveying in functional decline and disability. The development of specific therapeutic approaches able to block or reverse this condition may represent an invaluable tool for the promotion of a healthy aging among elderly. It is well established that changes in the quantity and the quality of dietary proteins, as well as the intake of specific amino acids, are able to counteract some of the physiopathological processes related to the progression of the loss of muscle mass and may have beneficial effects in improving the anabolic response of muscle in the elderly. Taurine is a non-essential amino acid expressed in high concentration in several mammalian tissues and particularly in skeletal muscle where it is involved in the modulation of intracellular calcium concentration and ion channel regulation and where it also acts as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory factor. The aim of this review is to summarize the pleiotropic effects of taurine on specific muscle targets and to discuss its role in regulating signaling pathways involved in the maintenance of muscle homeostasis. We also highlight the potential use of taurine as a therapeutic molecule for the amelioration of skeletal muscle function and performance severely compromised during aging. https://greenmedinfo.com/article/beneficial-effects-taurine-counteract-sarcopenia#comments Sarcopenia Taurine Anti-Inflammatory Agents Antioxidants anti aging Anti-Inflammatory Agents Antioxidants Sarcopenia Taurine Review Fri, 02 Dec 2016 22:36:21 +0000 greenmedinfo 139819 at https://greenmedinfo.com
